At-home microneedling pens have blown up on TikTok as a way to get smoother-looking skin between facials. They can be great — but they're tools, so a little know-how goes a long way. Here's the safe, beginner-friendly version.
What is microneedling?
A microneedling pen uses very fine needles to create tiny surface channels in the skin. At home, it's used cosmetically to help skin look smoother and more refreshed and to help your serums absorb better.
Start gentle
- Go shallow. Beginners should start at the shallowest depth setting. More is not better.
- Keep everything clean. Clean hands, clean skin, and a fresh, sealed cartridge every time.
- Patch test and go slow — once every few weeks is plenty as you start.
- Follow the included instructions for your specific device.

Prep and aftercare matter most
- Before: cleanse thoroughly. Some people use a topical numbing cream for comfort (external use only, follow the label).
- After: keep it simple and soothing — a calming ampoule (like cica or salmon-DNA), then a gentle moisturizer, and SPF the next morning is a must. (See post-care ampoules.)
Play it safe
Skip microneedling over active breakouts, irritated skin, or if you're unsure — and when in doubt, see a licensed professional. These are cosmetic tools for gentle at-home use, not medical treatments.
