Retinol has a scary reputation — peeling, redness, "purging." But newer Korean encapsulated retinols (often paired with bakuchiol) make it way easier to start. Here's the beginner-friendly way in.
What does retinol do?
Retinol is a vitamin-A ingredient loved in cosmetics for smoothing the look of fine lines, texture and dullness over time — that refreshed, well-rested finish. Encapsulated versions release slowly, so they're gentler than old-school retinols.
(Cosmetic note: these are appearance-level benefits — retinol skincare improves how skin looks.)
How to start (the golden rules)
- Go slow: 2 nights a week to start, then build up as your skin gets comfortable.
- Pea-size only, on dry skin at night.
- Buffer it: moisturizer before or after helps sensitive skin ease in.
- SPF the next day — always. Retinol makes skin more sun-sensitive, so daily sunscreen is non-negotiable. (Grab a daily SPF.)
- Don't stack strong acids or vitamin C on the same night when you're new.
Why the Korean approach is beginner-friendly
Encapsulated retinol + bakuchiol (a gentle plant "retinol alternative") gives you the smoothing benefits with far less of the sting and flaking — a softer landing for first-timers.
